Giants defensive coordinator James Bettcher at preseason opener despite loss of his mother: 'He was coaching for his mom'

Davis Webb had a great reaction to Saquon Barkley’s 39-yard run on his first NFL carry Thursday. “I looked at Alex Tanney and I said, ‘Dang, that was fast. He already has New York raving about him,’” Webb told the Daily News on a segment for SNY’s “Geico SportsNite” on Sunday. Webb knew Barkley would endear himself quickly to Giants fans, but no one knew he’d do it on his very first carry … Shurmur may have hinted Sunday that Odell Beckham Jr. could practice this week against the Lions after sitting him out of Thursday’s preseason opener. Asked if he considers practice against another team as risky for Beckham as a game, Shurmur answered: “I don’t think it has to be. So, no, not necessarily.” But the coach has been coy about the entire subject … Eli Manning took fewer snaps on Sunday than he has in other practices. Shurmur explained: “That was two-fold. It gave him a little less and that allowed the other quarterbacks to get a little more.” … Sunday’s did not practice list among active players: FS Darian Thompson (hamstring), LB Connor Barwin (“a little sore,” per Shurmur), CB Donte Deayon (hamstring), WR Travis Rudolph (unknown), TE Ryan O’Malley (foot). DE Jordan Williams (concussion protocol) practiced in a red non-contact jersey … WR Cody Latimer had a pretty good practice Sunday. Latimer has lined up consistently as the third wide receiver on the depth chart behind only Beckham and Sterling Shepard. Shurmur revealed that Latimer had been banged up early in camp and said he is “still getting his sea legs back out there.” Shurmur said Latimer is high on the depth chart because he has “performed well. I think he has the ability to make a contested catch, runs pretty good routes.”
