TV tonight: A new ‘Freaky Friday’ offers fresh take on body-swapping tale

TV picks for Friday, Aug. 10

WATCH THIS:

“Freaky Friday” (8 p.m., Disney Channel): After a book and three movies, apparently, someone decided that the world is crying out for yet another version of the delirious popular body-swapping tale. In this one — a musical — Heidi Blickenstaff and Cozi Zuehlsdorff play the bickering mother and daughter who wish they could switch places with one another for a day. Um, be careful what you wish for.

“Wynonna Earp” (9 p.m., Syfy): The forest reveals its’ secrets — and a clue to Nicole’s past.  Meanwhile, Wynonna pays an unexpected visit to her mother.

“Dateline NBC” (10 p.mn., NBC): In “Hollywood Heat,” Josh Mankiewicz reports stories from the streets of Hollywood, including an interview with Jason Blum about how he is revamping the horror genre. Jamie Lee Curtis, Jordan Peele and Octavia Spencer also discuss what it is like to work with the movie producer.

“The Killer Closer” (10 p.m., I.D.): In the shadow of the Hollywood sign on the outskirts of Los Angeles are the city’s roughest neighborhoods. In the late 1990s, LAPD’s Foothill Homicide Unit investigated hundreds of murders, but only Detective Lindy Gligorijevic was dubbed “the killer closer.” Driven by the need to give her victims a voice, she revisits her most shocking cases in this new series.

“Killjoys” (10 p.m., Syfy): Delle Seyah’s impossibly complicated delivery, John on the brink of madness, Dutch, staggered after being trapped in another dimension. Things are not exactly quiet on the good ship Lucy. Nor are they back in the Quad where our Killjoys are learning what comes of turning your back on sleeping Hullen.

STREAM THIS:

“Insatiable” (Netflix): This dark and twisted revenge comedy has already riled critics over its depiction of body-shaming. It follows Patty (Debbie Ryan), a high school girl named Patty, who for years, has been bullied because of her weight. Now, after shedding many pounds, an enraged Patty is out for payback.
