Sheriff’s deputies searched a home in Bonita on Thursday night looking for a “suicidal father” and his 18-month-old son who was the subject of an Amber Alert out of Los Angeles, authorities said.
The toddler, Jaden Jose, was taken about 3:30 p.m. by his non-custodial father, John Jose, from the Arleta neighborhood in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
John Jose was last seen in a 2004 dark blue four-door Audi A4 with California license plate number 7ZVX343.
“John took Jaden without the biological mother’s consent and threatened to take Jaden out of state,” according to a police statement. “John also threatened to kill himself.”
San Diego police dispatchers reported that John Jose called the LAPD around 11:20 p.m. Thursday and told them he was in the San Diego area, though he did not specify his location.
About five minutes later, authorities pushed out an Amber Alert, including to phones with San Diego County area codes.
Earlier in the night, around 10 p.m., San Diego County sheriff’s deputies responded to a home near the Westfield Plaza Bonita mall looking for Jaden and John Jose, sheriff’s Lt. Arnold Aldana told the Union-Tribune.
The deputies searched a home on Bonita Mesa Road near Plaza Bonita Road, but the father and son were not there, Aldana said.
The LAPD said Jaden is 2 feet tall, weighs about 27 pounds and has brown hair and eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue tank top and gray pants.
John Jose was described as a 30-year-old Filipino who is 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighs about 130 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes.
Anyone who sees Jaden Jose or his father is urged to call 911.
Anyone with other information about the toddler’s whereabouts was asked to call the watch commander at the LAPD’s Foothill Station at (818) 756-8861, or after hours at (877) LAPD-24-7.
